Botanical Spotlight: Kokum Butter

Kokum Butter, Garcinia indica, also known as Wild Mangosteen, comes from the seeds of the fruit-bearing Kokum tree. This evergreen tree is indigenous to South India where it grows in tropical rain forests. With a dense canopy of leaves, Kokum trees grow up to 50 feet tall and produce berry-like fruits with seeds from which Kokum butter is produced. Once a tree is at least 7 years old its fallen fruits are collected, the seeds are separated and dried then ground, and finally pressed to release their oils. The oil is then filtered of impurities and churned until a solid butter forms.

Kokum butter has a very faint, dried grass-like aroma. Highly nourishing, Kokum butter is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants that help counteract skin damaging free radicals. Kokum butter effectively repairs and enriches skin cells from within, restoring skin's natural state of healthy function and vibrancy. One of the most stable botanical butters Kokum butter has a silky non-greasy feel as it melts against warm skin. This healing butter is non-comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores and is often used in place of cacao butter. Kokum butter is exquisitely emollient and improves skin's elasticity, flexibility and firmness. Rich in Vitamin E, Kokum butter protects against skin cell degeneration, dryness, and sun damage. An excellent ingredient in products that cater to dry skin, this nutritive and protective botanical butter is beneficial for all skin types, especially acne prone skin seeking to avoid the pore-clogging potential of cacao butter.
