Kokum Butter, Garcinia indica, also known as Wild Mangosteen, comes from the seeds of the fruit-bearing Kokum tree. This evergreen tree is indigenous to South India where it grows in tropical rain forests. With a dense canopy of leaves, Kokum trees grow up to 50 feet tall and produce berry-like fruits with seeds from which Kokum butter is produced. Once a tree is at least 7 years old its fallen fruits are collected, the seeds are separated and dried then ground, and finally pressed to release their oils. The oil is then filtered of impurities and churned until a solid butter forms.
